UK: IT Academy opens doors
Katie Davis, director of government IT profession, said the initiative to build the academy is now gathering steam.
The foundation of the academy was announced by Ian Watmore when he was head of the e-Government Unit in May 2005. It forms part of his campaign to build a framework for IT professionals in government, a task for which Davis is now responsible.
USA: Woodford County to develop Web site
When Gregory Jackson was researching online about Woodford County, he was startled by what he did not find.
"Basically, when I applied for the county administrator's position, I did a search and found out that Woodford County didn't have a Web site yet," he said.
UK: Ministries pledge to cut NHS bureaucracy
The government is trying to cut down on bureaucracy in the health service to give staff more time to focus on patient care.
The Cabinet Office and the Department of Health have, in a report, signalled that reducing the 'confusion' around sharing data would improve business practices in the NHS.

But of course it’s not all about using conventional PCs and the like. For instance, we have seen some really exciting niche applications that use mobile phones and text messaging — vets and farmers using SMS technologies to set up visits and to gather animal disease data and fish farmers getting test results quickly from the laboratories so that they can get their product to market much more quickly. Another area of growth is in the speech processing facilities that go way beyond the disembodied mechanical voices that we used to have to deal with and we now see applications where you would almost believe that you are talking to a human being.
